SUMMER ESSENTIALS: Skincare & Beauty

June 7, 2019 Caitlin Taylor
caitlin_miyako_taylor_summer_essentials_shopping_guide_beauty_and_skincnare

Summer is already upon us, but in case you’ve been holding off on stocking up on beauty and skincare goods for the season, here’s a friendly reminder.

P.S. sunscreen is for every season, not just summer.

SKINCARE

Frank Body Original Coffee Body Scrub — If you’re spending your days sprawled out by the pool or on the sand, you’ll want to make sure your skin is smooth and toned. I love the smell of this scrub, and it works like a dream.
Supergoop Sun-Defying Sunscreen Oil — I know you’ve had nightmares about streaky, white sunscreen that has that distinctly (bad) sunscreen smell. This is the opposite. Lightweight and fresh. No streaks. And made with CLEAN ingredients.
Dr. Jart Focuspot Micro Tip Patches — I tend to break out in the summer from sweat, makeup…all those fun things that come along with the warmer months. Get rid of blemishes overnight with these incredible patches. I use them all the time and can’t recommend them enough.
Beauty Counter Countersun Sunscreen Stick — I love all of Beautycounter’s products, and this lightweight sunscreen stick is easy to travel with, and applies without streaks. Layer it under makeup to keep your skin healthy all summer long.

BEAUTY

Browfood Tinted Brow Enhancing Gel Fix — I like keeping eye makeup minimal during the summer. I love this product for its
easy application and long-staying formula that creates effortless brows, because summer beauty should be easy, and all about enhancing your glow.
Caudalie Beauty Elixir — Perfect to keep in your bag for a refresh throughout the day. Plus, it smells amazing.
Beautycounter Sheer Lipstick — I’m not a huge lipstick person, so I love how sheer and creamy this formula is. The shade ‘twig’ is
perfect on every skin tone — it’s a nude with a touch of peachy pink.
Beautycounter Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation — Can you tell how much I love Beautycounter? Their Tint Skin is lightweight and
made with clean ingredients, showcasing your beautiful summer glow, without the nasties.
Laura Mercier Colour Infusion Powder Blush — I’m not always wearing blush, but when I am I reach for a peachy color like this one.
Slightly shimmery, apply gradually to cheeks for a beautiful, sun-kissed effect.

WEEKEND GETAWAY IN JOSHUA TREE

February 11, 2019 Caitlin Taylor

Weekend trips to Joshua Tree remind me of how much I love living in Southern California. Even though it’s just a couple hours drive from the city, you feel like you’re in a whole new world — there really is something magical about it. A couple weekends ago, some friends and I drove down to Joshua Tree and stayed in an airbnb for a weekend to celebrate one of my best' friend’s birthdays. It was a short, yet sweet, trip, and made me think that weekend getaways should become a regular thing in my life. Here’s to hoping they will.

Mornings at home are usually slow. It’s hard to wake up, and almost impossible to get out of bed. Yet, during this weekend away, I somehow woke up at 7 or 8am, despite the fact that I had gone to bed late the night before. Easy, slow mornings were spent lounging on the couch, catching up on reading for school before anyone else was even up. But it didn’t feel like work. As people started to trickle into the living area, we would brew a Chemex of Joshua Tree Coffee Company’s Breakfast Bliss, which is now officially my favorite coffee. I can drink this coffee black, and I will drink 6 cups of it in one morning, without fail.

One of the things I loved most about this airbnb was the light. I forgot how nice it was to wake up to natural light — living in Downtown, this is unfortunately something I don’t experience very often. To keep my skin hydrated in the cold and wind (the desert doesn’t get warm until March or April, people…) I made sure to bring simple yet effective favorites like Summer Fridays Overtime and Jet Lag masks, my go-to Aesop Elemental Facial Barrier Cream, Glossier’s Balm Dot Com, and Glossier Cloud Paint for a pop of color.

caitlin_miyako_taylor_j_tree_weekend_4

We spent afternoons hiking (or rather, walking) in Joshua Tree National Park, admiring the incredible rock formations and formidable Joshua Trees, and regretting that many of us were not prepared for the blustery conditions of the desert in late January.

caitlin_miyako_taylor_j_tree_weekend_5

In the evenings, we were greeted with a glorious sunset. The kind of sunset you just can’t look away from. The kind of sunset that almost looks fake. These photos? No filter. Just me living my best desert life, wrapped in a warm Levis sherpa jacket and doing my best cowgirl impression in a Brixton hat.

This is my reminder to you: take that weekend vacation. Drive up the coast and stay at a cozy hotel, b&b, or airbnb for even a few days. This is my way to get away from the monotonous, busy weeks of work and school, because a getaway doesn’t have to involve a transatlantic flight. You never know what’s right around your neighborhood.

AT HOME WITH URBAN OUTFITTERS

December 5, 2018 Caitlin Taylor
Caitlin_miyako_taylor_uo_home_2

I remember when I was in my senior year of high school and I had absolutely NO idea what I wanted to study in college. My counselor told me to make a list of things I enjoyed as a way to guide my major selection, and I wrote “interior design.” No, I didn’t expect I would actually go into interior design as a career, but I always loved to look at decor pieces and imagine what my dream space would look like (I obviously curated inspiration in a Pinterest board, too). Moving into my first natural light-filled, all-white, hardwood-floored apartment last year was something I had been waiting for since I was maybe 13. And I knew exactly where I wanted to go to furnish the space — Urban Outfitters Home.

When I moved to a new apartment in Downtown Los Angeles earlier this summer (with my boyfriend), I brought all of those pieces with me, adding additional items that combined our tastes and needs in our new home. While these pieces were (so kindly) gifted by the wonderful team at UO Home, I was not paid to create this post — all opinions are authentic and my own.

caitlin_miyako_taylor_uo_home_1

Let’s start with where the action happens — the bedroom. This room is pretty small so our main priority was maximizing space and creating the illusion of a bigger room. Instead of ordering side tables, I installed these Wooden Display Shelves which have plenty of room for my bedside knick knacks (like my acrylic polaroid photo frame) and can be oriented horizontally or vertically. The adorable table lamp featured here is ALSO from UO Home, but is unfortunately no longer available. Fear not, you can still find tons of cute table lamps here!

To keep the space as bright and open as possible, we picked the softest white T-Shirt Jersey Duvet, and Allergy Shield Pillows accented with these amazing abstract print pillow cases. To tie the room together, we hung an oversized Hub Mirror, which is fitted with a black rubber edge to prevent any scratches to your wall. You can also snag the kimono I’m wearing here!

Now we move on to the living area. The center piece of this room is definitely our enormous couch, a handmedown from from my parents (where I’m definitely guilty of lounging on for hours at a time in oversized sweats and a CK bra). This incredible piece is over 15 years old, and worn-in to perfection. To let the couch speak for itself, we accented it with neutral-colored pillows like these super comfy Sherpa Fleece ones and an Embroidered Throw Pillow!

These incredible mid-century modern-inspired lounge chairs, also from UO Home, complete our seating arrangement, and look perfect with these pom pom-adorned throw pillows (find similar here and here)!

Caitlin_miyako_taylor_uo_home_3

To bring some texture to the room, we tied everything together with a massive Geo Printed Rug, which kind of mimics the design of a Moroccan rug, without the enormous price tag.

The piece of furniture that brings our entire living area together? Our Breakfast Bar! Stacked against our couch, this table is incredible because it makes such amazing use of our limited space…not to mention, the stools can be racked up to keep everything super space efficient. This is where I do all of my work from, and I love that it’s a seamless transition from our kitchen to the living area, because there’s no built-in wall separating the two.

Caitlin_miyako_taylor_uo_home_8

And last but not least, I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about the bathroom. To add a bit of color to our otherwise all white bathroom, we added some blush tones with this Pom Pom Shower Curtain and beautiful surfer print hung on the back wall. To finish, the simplest counter-top marble tray to house our essential fragrances.

Next time you’re redecorating your space (or just want to window shop), I highly recommend you check out UO Home! They have some pretty incredible pieces for every single space, and if you have any questions about the pieces featured here, comment below!

ALL THE FEELS: Summer Comfort in Lou&Grey

June 5, 2018 Caitlin Taylor
Caitlin_miyako_taylor_lou_and_grey_may_18_1

If there's one style motto I live by, it's "Dress for comfort." And that's what Lou&Grey is all about. Whenever I go into my favorite stores I take time to touch each piece of fabric — feel the weight and texture of it between my fingers to make sure that tee shirt or pair of pants will be comfortable and help me feel my best. Last week I stopped by my go-to Lou&Grey at One Pasadena to pick out some new summer pieces (their Garment Dye collection is amazing!). Every time I shop there, I am always blown away by the beautiful interior, super-soft textiles, and friendly salespeople. And did I mention how cute the dressing rooms are?

While I love the warmer weather, I don't always love summer clothing. I'm just not the biggest fan of shorts, and when the temperature climbs into the 90s (or even 100s), I usually end up feeling uncomfortable in anything I wear....until I found these two beautiful linen pieces from Lou&Grey's Garment Dye collection. The answer to staying comfortable AND on-trend this season is these Linen Pants and Shadowstripe Double V Top. I love how monochrome, lightweight, and simple this look is — both pieces look amazing together, and each can be dressed up or down with simple accessories. For a casual day in the desert, I wore this look with a a couple layered necklaces and a pair of mules. Simple and comfy as it gets. And here are a couple other of my favorite pieces from the collection: The Tie-Up Blouse and Softstretch Linen Pants.

Chloé Nomade

February 24, 2018 Caitlin Taylor
caitlin_miyako_taylor_chloe_nomade_1

When I was younger I used to travel. All the time. Before I could walk or talk, my parents flew me around the globe — to Japan, Europe, and across the United States. With time, I've become increasingly enamored by the countless cultural destinations I have yet to explore. Chloe's newest fragrance, Nomade, is a reminder to hold on to that wanderlust. To let it be a guiding force in my life so I never cease exploring, learning, and experiencing the beauty that exists around the world.

caitlin_miyako_taylor_chloe_nomade_2
caitlin_miyako_taylor_chloe_nomade_3

It is a reminder to make time for adventures, even the smallest ones.

Because to travel is to live.

And there is so much I have yet to see.

caitlin_miyako_taylor_chloe_nomade_4

At this moment, I only have time for weekend getaways, but a quick trip up the Pacific Coast Highway is better than nothing. The salty ocean breeze whipping through the car windows reminds me that there exists a beautiful coastal expanse just minutes away from my home. The crunching sand beneath my feet and sun's warm embrace overwhelm me with an even greater desire to explore. Because in this moment I am carefree, full of happiness, and inspired by adventure.

caitlin_miyako_taylor_chloe_noamde_5

Any trip can be a journey — an eye-opening experience. I plan to spend mine with the ones I love, without concrete plans; just a yearning to see everything there is to see, and to find inspiration in all that is novel. Discover your wanderlust today.

Nomade is available at Sephora.
